The Mad River Farm & Market is located on a 720 acre farm in northern Champaign County. Guided 45 minute tours of each Castle acquaint you with both of these remarkable residences. A separate single admission fee is charged at each home. As you enjoy shopping in the many specialty shops in the Monument Square of Urbana, you will also notice the many examples of Victorian architecture. Most shops are opened Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.   From April to October come and participate in the First Friday activities.

Also enjoy shopping and browsing along the historic downtowns of both Mechanicsburg and St. Paris.

Was Johnny Appleseed a real person, or a tall tale? Where did his travels take him? What were his philosophies? Why was he so popular with the early pioneer settlers? You’ll learn all of this and much more during your visit to The Johnny Appleseed Educational Center & Museum. The Center is located on the campus of Urbana University and holds the largest collection of memorabilia and written information about the life of John “Appleseed” Chapman known to exist in the world! In 1999, seedlings from the last known-surviving apple tree planted by Johnny Appleseed were transplanted in the courtyard around the Museum. School groups, motorcoach tours, local clubs and senior citizens are always welcome!

   
 

Oakdale Cemetery

This lovely cemetery is also the site of the statue and burial site for Simon Kenton.   John Quincy Adams ward, a famous 19 th century sculpture from Urbana , is also buried in Oakdale. A replica of a statue in Central Park in NYC entitled The Hunter, is near the entrance to the cemetery.

A bit of Ohio's ancient history remains intact at Cedar Bog Nature Preserve in southern Champaign County. A National Natural Landmark registered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, the site was named after the northern white cedar (or arbor vitae) which still grows there, as it did thousands of years ago when the glacial age's cool climate affected the area.

Visitors are conducted through the Caverns on guided tours at frequent intervals. There is an admission fee for the forty-five munute, mile long tour. Ohio Caverns was recently listed in Parade Magazine as one of the top 6 caves in America!  Ohio Caverns is the largest and most beautiful of all Ohio caves. Its exquisite crystal-white stalactite and stalagmite formations are nowhere to be found in greater profusion or artistic settings. Simon Kenton Bike Trail
Woodburn Road, near Cedar Bog Nature Preserve to State Rt. 55 south of Urbana
Trail Length: 2.5 miles


The Simon Kenton Trail, which will be made of asphalt, will connect Urbana and Champaign County with a developing network of statewide multi-use trails in Ohio. The trail will follow the abandoned Erie-Lackawanna rail line. Phase I begins at Woodburn Road, near Cedar Bog Nature Preserve and runs north to State Rt. 55 for a length of 2.5 miles.Phases II and III will continue the trail north into Urbana and south to County Line Road. As of July 1, 2001, Phase I is complete and open for public use.The trail will connect with Melvin Miller Park, the YMCA, the Champaign County Library, Urbana University, the Johnny Appleseed Museum, and the industrial park, creating a safe, alternate, non-motorized route through Urbana. Future development will connect the Simon Kenton Trail with the Little Miami Scenic Trail and the Ohio to Erie Trail, a state-wide trail running from the Ohio River to Lake Erie. Walking, biking, in-line skating, and wheelchairs are welcome.

The path is now completed connecting the trail to Clark Country to the YMCA on the east side of Urbana .   A Train Depot on Rt 36 ( Miami Street ) purchased by the Simon Kenton Pathfinders will soon be available to provide restrooms and refreshments as well as information to cyclists.
