Grimes Field, an active airport rooted in aviation history, hosts two museums. The Grimes Flying Lab Museum is a part of the National Aviation Heritage Area, which celebrates Ohio’s central role in the history of flight. The museum pays tribute to the pioneering spirit of Warren G. Grimes, Father of the Aircraft Lighting Industry. He founded Grimes Manufacturing of Urbana (now Honeywell Aerospace) and gave the airport to the City of Urbana. The jewel of the museum is the restored Grimes Flying Lab, a Beech 18 used to test Grimes’ innovations. The Champaign Aviation Museum features World War II-era aircraft and the ongoing restoration of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, which can be viewed by visitors. The airport hosts fly-ins and special events, including the Mid-Eastern Regional Fly-in, one of the country’s leading gatherings of experimental aircraft, held the second weekend of September. |
